Review: Ondergedoken als Anne Frank: Verhalen van Joodse kinderen in de Tweede Wereldoorlog

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I read this book because my brother had to read it instead of Anne Frank's Diary (as I did in middle school). It is surprising the amount of suffering that they lived retelled by them. In one story, a girl of barely 3 years had memories of her hidding tour, which is impresive taking into account that our memories stay with us firmly after we are 7 y.o. Many of the people interviewed for this end their stories telling how their families were broken and never recovered from what they saw and live during the holocaust.
It breaks my hear that they say "I didn't look that jewish", basically because it is hard to differentiate them from nomal kids according to their pictures. In the end, they all had printed the sorrow of their lifes in their eyes.
on the other hand, it is nice to learn that many people helped others and that kids were hidden so they could live, and their stories are heartwarming as well as heartbreaking, because they are true.
